A pilot's rank and career advancement are through the licenses they acquire. The decision, then, is whether  to get a post-secondary education after graduating high school or to jump straight into flying lessons and getting your licenses as fast as you can. Many colleges offer a program called the avaition or aeronautics degree. This program allows you to graduate with a degree or diploma, as well as the necessary licensing to graduate ready for hire. These will be full-time programs and will be finished in 2 years for the diploma with the option of further schooling, depending on the school.
